In conjunction with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council had the honor to host Dr. Ki-Jung Kim for a talk on the future of the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Kim, advisor on foreign policy and national security to South Korean President Moon Jae-In’s campaign for president in 2017.
On June 17th, 2019, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council had the honor of hosting Dr. Ashton B. Carter, the 25th Secretary of Defense for the United States of America (2015-2017) for a discussion on his time at the helm of the Pentagon and today’s most pressing international security threats.
On June 13th, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council partnered with Netflix to allow LAWAC Members access to a free screening of “The Edge of Democracy,” an award winning documentary by filmmaker Petra Costa, who was available for a short Q & A session afterwards.
On June 11th, the Los Angeles World Affairs Council hosted Dr. Larry Diamond, an expert in democratic studies and comparative politics at Stanford’s Hoover Institution and Freeman Spogli Institute, to discuss the state of democracy around the world as undemocratic states like China rise in their global influence, once stable democracies trend towards illiberalism or authoritarianism, and “democracy building” is generally seen as shorthand for U.S. military intervention.
In this complex and uncertain global environment, how do we establish an international environment that’s better for all of humanity? Speaking at a roundtable event at Spago in Beverly Hills, UN High Representative of the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé, addressed Board and International Circle members on how his office works to find solutions to this pressing question.
On May 15th, the Young Professionals of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council hosted Consul General Michael Howells of the United Kingdom to speak on the complex nature of Brexit, its impact on the United Kingdom and Ireland’s border, and what it means for Britain’s future.
